Being a former military family, we have come to realize we have a habit of leaping before we look. In some cases that can be a very unwise way to live, but in our situation, it made us a perfect fit with the military lifestyle with all the flexibility required! In purely Davis fashion, that is how our farming adventure started! Back in December 2013, I went with our boys to go look at a few laying hens that were advertised on our local Craigslist. Because who doesn’t want a few farm fresh eggs?!? Little did I know those couple of chickens would mushroom into the delivery of 33 sheep that following Thursday with the beginning of lambing starting Sunday morning! It was definitely a trial by fire!! 16 lambs later we had a starter herd of 49 hair-sheep. For those who do not know, hair-sheep are meat sheep (think lamb chops!). Hair-sheep do not need to be sheared. That was the beginning of our adventure in raising Grass-Fed Meat.
As you can imagine, we are self-taught. With one of us growing up on a farm and one of us growing up in the city (even though there was dairy farming in my familial blood), we were still pretty wet behind the ears. So like I used to say to our kids when we would get into the vehicle when Daddy was deployed, “Hey kids! We are going on an Adventure!” This is our sixth year of hobby farming and I would most definitely say we are still on an Adventure. We have learned more from our failures than our successes. We have learned more about why God refers to us as sheep in the Bible than we care to mention (but we will elaborate as time goes on). We are grateful for this place we call home and we are excited to share it with those looking for a little food to feed their families or a little respite from the hustle and bustle on this face-paced world.
